Balanced Dog Training – FAQ
1. What is balanced dog training?
Balanced dog training is an approach that uses both positive reinforcement (rewarding desired behaviors) and fair, humane corrections for unwanted behaviors. The goal is to clearly communicate with your dog, so they understand what’s expected and can thrive in a safe, structured environment.
2. How is this different from purely positive training?
Purely positive training focuses only on rewards and ignores or redirects unwanted behaviors. Balanced training still uses rewards but also addresses behaviors that could be unsafe, dangerous, or persist despite redirection. This combination often leads to faster, more reliable results, especially for challenging behaviors.
3. Is balanced training harsh or cruel?
Not at all. Modern balanced training is about communication, not punishment. Corrections are fair, calm, and proportional, never harsh. We always prioritize your dog’s safety, well-being, and trust.
4. What tools are used in balanced training?
We may use a variety of tools depending on your dog’s needs, such as leashes, prong collars, Starmark collars, or e-collars (remote collars). All tools are introduced slowly and humanely, with a focus on teaching before ever correcting.
5. Will my dog still like and trust me?
Yes! Dogs often become more confident and relaxed when they understand clear boundaries. Balanced training strengthens your bond because you’re giving your dog consistent leadership and communication.
6. What types of behaviors can balanced training address?
Jumping on people
Pulling on leash
Counter surfing
Barking excessively
Door dashing
Aggression or reactivity toward dogs/people
General obedience and manners
Off-leash reliability
7. Can balanced training work for puppies?
Yes, balanced training can be adapted for puppies, though corrections for young dogs are very gentle and age-appropriate. The focus is on building good habits early and preventing problem behaviors before they start.
8. How quickly will I see results?
Every dog is different, but many owners notice improvement after the first session. Long-term, reliable results depend on consistency, follow-through at home, and your commitment to the training process.
9. Do you guarantee results?
While we can’t ethically guarantee that a dog will never make mistakes, we can guarantee that we’ll give you the tools, knowledge, and support you need to create lasting change—if you stay consistent with the program.
10. Will I need to use corrections forever?
Usually not. Once your dog fully understands the rules and boundaries, corrections become rare. Most owners eventually rely primarily on praise, rewards, and natural communication to maintain good behavior.
